I see that I should have read Guillermo's followup before my last reply.
Yes, setting VPATH=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu does allow the build to
succeed.
I had planned to use that instead of the debian patch.

I didn't set --with-dynlib --with-lib very consistently.
I'll go double-check those. Maybe I can get rid of this VPATH stuff too.

Yes, setting --with-dynlib fixes the issue nicely.
I had set --dynlibdir and hadn't thought about needing to tell it more.
